Mata Kalavati College of Special Education was established under the aegis of Purvanchal Khadi Gramoudyog Vikas Samiti with the objective of developing skilled and committed professionals in the field of special education. The college was first recognized in 2007 for the D.Ed. Special Education (Hearing Impairment) programme. Since its inception, the institution has trained a large number of students who have gone on to serve as dedicated educators and rehabilitation professionals for children with disabilities.
The establishment and early recognition of the college were made possible through the dedicated efforts of Shri Gopesh Tiwari and Shri Rajesh Tiwari, whose vision was to strengthen professional education for the rehabilitation and inclusion of persons with disabilities. Following the passing of Shri Rajesh Tiwari in 2008, Shri Gopesh Tiwari continued to lead the institution with commitment and purpose, furthering its mission of advancing education and services for children with disabilities until his own passing later in 2023.
After 2008, the college expanded its academic offerings to include additional professional programmes such as DHLS (Diploma in Hearing, Language and Speech) and D.Ed. Special Education (Intellectual Disability). The D.Ed. Special Education (HI) programme prepares educators for working with children with hearing impairment, while the D.Ed. Special Education (ID) programme focuses on intellectual disability. The DHLS programme addresses hearing, speech, and language rehabilitation, strengthening interdisciplinary professional training.
The college is named in memory of the founders’ grandmother, Smt. Mata Kalavati Devi, as a tribute to her values and legacy. Through its academic programmes and institutional commitment, Mata Kalavati College of Special Education continues to contribute meaningfully to the field of special education and rehabilitation.
